I purchased my MBP in 2021 and have installed Sonoma 14.0 lately. What I have found is the laptop is running out of battery easy faster after the installation than before. Is there any problem or compatibility issue please?

Do a SMC reset as the first thing to see if anything changes. Also grab a copy of CoconutBattery and see what it reports about the battery.

That does not tell what to do for SMC reset on Apple Silicon.

See this;

  • Reset the SMC: Reset the System Management Controller (SMC), which controls how your Mac manages power. If you have a Mac with Apple silicon, just restart your computer. For other Mac computers, see the Apple Support article Reset the SMC of your Mac.

The best SMC reset on an Mx Mac is to power it off, then wait about 10 seconds and do a cold boot. The SMC is reset every cold boot.

As for battery, the CPU is busy handing the re-indexing of the storage drive for Spotlight, so battery life can be impacted while that is happening.

Finally, Sonoma is up to 14.1 now, so it might help to do that update.

As Jake has said, after a macOS upgrade a lot of stuff happens "under the hood" it's worth checking Activity Monitor under the %CPU column to see what is going on. If you see something using a lot of CPU resources you can look it up on the web to see what it is.

Lots of folks are reporting the same issue:

Apple Support is reportedly recommending re-installing Sonoma as the cure:

1. Back up your computer. (Optional. But always a good idea in case you encounter the very case where things go sideways.)

2. Restart your Mac and hold the power button until you get the boot options.

3. Click Options.

4. Click Reinstall macOS Sonoma.

5. Let it reinstall, and it'll bring you to the normal setup process.

Thanks Rod. I first noticed a severe decline in battery performance when I upgraded to Sonoma, as noted in the thread above. This was a common problem to many users. I have had tremendous frustration about this and connected to AC 100% of the time in order to circumvent the issue. Just installed Sequoia and noticed a much slower decline in power. Thought the problem has been addressed by Apple?
