so what can commonly go wrong mechanically out of warranty (ie Applecare) ?
i have replaced the Superdrive once and now the fan also, can anything else mechanically go wrong other than (yes I know the screen can go too) these items that have moving parts, I am planning to upgrade the HD to SSD asap.

Sometimes nothing other times hard drive, ram, wireless card and logic board its electronics anything can burn out with no set time limit or it can surprise you and just keep running well past its prime.

I have a 2009 MBP 15" and the system is currently at the Apple store for repair. The unit is used @ 3-4 times a week for 2-3 hours otherwise the unit is off and stored in a cabinet. Apple is replacing the HD, HD bracket and motherboard on the system. Not sure what caused the system to fail but very surprised to see so many components failed on the unit. I had expected the Apple product to be of a higher quality then Dell PC's but I guess I was wrong. I have three Dell system at home and never had a issue like this with those units. I really enjoy the APPLE system when its running just shocked at the poor quality of the components.

Apple does not make their hard drives they purchase them from a third party just like Dell and others. Things can go wrong out of the box or years later.

Anything can go wrong. It's just like anything you buy with a warranty...which eventually expires. Automobiles, dishwashers, big screen TV's, home furnace, an air conditioner, etc.

But with a computer...there is not much mechanical in it other than the hard drive, the optical drive, the keyboard, fans, and the "physical click" on the trackpad. And most of these items usually take a long time to fail.

Honestly...don't worry about it. Just keep your hard drive backed up...and ENJOY...your computer.:)
