Snow Leopard

Hey guys I am still using Snow Leopard OS on my iMac. I really love my computer and it has never had an issues from day one. However as time passes by I know that my OS will be obselete. My question is should I upgrade to a different OS or just keep what I have. Buying a new iMac at this time is out because the budget will just not allow it at this time. Which OS if I upgrade will work with what I have?

No one can answer that question accurately without know which specific Mac you have & it's specs.

And what you use your Mac for (primary apps you use) would also assist.

You've given no rational for upgrading your computers OS.

This is like saying...I know my pants will wear out some day...should I buy some new ones? If you said that your pants were full of holes, torn, and the zipper doesn't work...I would say buy some new pants.

What you haven't said is...Mac OS 10.6 (for you in your computing situation) is full of holes, rips, tears, and the zipper doesn't work...should I upgrade?

Or to put things more in computer terms...with OS 10.6 you haven't mentioned having:

- hardware compatability problems
- software compatability problems
- features in newer OS versions that you want
- etc.

Also. You haven't told us what EXACT computer model you have (and its spec's). So even if we were to suggest upgrading your computers OS...we can't tell you which version without knowing what model (and specs) computer you have.

Greg, I use Snow Leopard also, and have no plans to upgrade it on this computer. I'll buy a new Mac someday, but I don't see it as an emergency. One course of action to pursue, if you can, is to start a new computer savings fund. I happen to have enough saved to buy a new Mac, but I'm not pulling the trigger just yet. Someday, I might have a catastrophic failure, then I'll be forced to do a complete upgrade to a new machine.

I us my computer casually for surfing the web, Watching You Tube (
golf videos) and instruction. Mostly for just research, don't really do anything much more with it. Just love the iMac. Never have had any issues from day one. Just something I got to thinking about.

Your iMac can run the latest OS version "Yosemite" (10.10). From what I'm reading your iMac is running just fine…and is able to do everything you need it to do without a problem. So I'm not seeing anything that would "scream out"…"I need an OS upgrade".

The only thing to consider is…some folks feel (since Apple dropped support for OS 10.6 about 1 year ago)...that OS 10.6 is not quite as secure as it once was.

I think the security issue relates only to browsers, correct? I began having performance issues with Safari as well, and it can't be updated or upgraded independent of the OS. In other words, I have the latest version of Safari that will run on Snow Leopard. My solution was to switch to Firefox, which had a more recent update. I do get frequent messages about a script not being able to run, which I cancel and go on. I'm not sure that presents a security issue, but it does slow me down a bit. Perhaps responses to this will help the OP as well with making a decision.

Security issues relate to anything external to the computer that could be imported into the computer and cause harm or anything undesirable:

- Items via an internet browser.
- Items via email.
- Items via an external hard drive.
- Items via an USB thumb drive.
- etc.

I'm not sure what the performance issues are. Could be related the older version of Safari. Or outdated versions of Flash, Java, or not being able to use newer versions of some plugins.

Good solution using Firefox. I know that on one of my computers running Snow Leopard…if I go to a site like You Tube…I get a message that the browser version is no longer supported (outdated).

Not sure what the script issue is (maybe you could post a screenshot if it's a serious concern). I don't think that it's a security issue.
