Reports that an Australian regional airline had to extinguish a glowing red iPhone 4 that was emitting "dense smoke" on an airplane have sparked concerns over the handset's battery safety.

Thank you media. Maybe they'd like to write a story about the set of AA batteries I pulled out of my drawer last week that had exploded?

LOL - well Lipo batteries can definitely cause issues if damaged or shorted - but fortunately - it seems to be pretty rare.

I had 5 DuraCells that while they did not explode, corroded so badly in my very expensive 5-Cell Mag Light Police Flashlight that it was worthless. I yelled at Durcell and was sent a brand new 5-Cell Mag light! I have never used their batteries in that light again though.

With all the battery devices I have owned over the years, that is the only incident I have had.

I wish you had posted this last week Dennis. I threw away a MagLight for the same reason. The DuraCell batteries corroded so badly that I could not remove them from the light. It wasn't an expensive police model but costly enough. Maybe I need to yell at DuraCell and see if they send me a new light.

BTW, the batteries were not old - well within their life term.

Just kidding.
