I apologize in advance if this thread is in the wrong place.

I just upgraded to the latest version of skype (5.3.59.1093). I log in - tutorial screen, everything seems to be in order, but the minute I actually do anything (e.g. message a contact, view chat history, attempt to dial anything), the application freezes, I get the dreaded rainbow spiral of doom, and when I right-click on the Skype icon, it says 'Application not responding'. I have forced quit, restarted the application, and restarted my computer multiple times and the same thing happens.

What would you suspect is going on? What should I do? Downgrade perhaps?

Well, it does have a plist file:
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.skype.skype.plist

You can try this:
Move that plist file to your Desktop. Now try Skype. It will create a fresh plist file. It's like starting over. Did that help?
