Aaaargh! In iTunes 10, you could set Shuffle by individual playlists (or their parent folder) and it stuck, so playlists either had Shuffle ‘on’ or ‘off’. You didn't have to change the setting when you were in another playlist.

But in iTunes 12, the Shuffle setting seems to be global, which means that you have to check for each playlist and reset it if necessary. Surely there must be a way to set Shuffle permanently for each playlist?.

My understanding is that you can't Shuffle permanently for each playlist, but as I have little experience in doing so, I may be missing something.

Sorry - best I can offer.

Did you see this? It may do what you want.

I managed in the end by having global Shuffle ‘off’ and creating a Smart playlist ‘in random order’. Thank you.

However I still have a problem compared to iTunes 10, where I had 3 windows open permanently:
  1. Chart hits arranged by year with the sidebar so I could choose a different year’s playlist each day.
  2. The ‘shuffled’ favourites playlist
  3. My entire Library with a Search bar so I could look for random tracks without disturbing the other two windows.
I can reproduce 1 and 2, but if I open the 3rd window, there is no Search bar! It seems you can only have the Search in the window with the sidebar. Any thoughts?.

Can't you right click on each playlist, and select "open in new window"?

Do you mean my main Charts window with the sidebar? There are about 20 nested playlists, and I need that to be the main window so I know - from the sidebar - where I am from day to day!.

You stated you need 3 playlists open at the same time. Is that separate from the main iTunes 12 window?

BTM, I'm using Sequoia and Music version 1.5.5.34, just for clarification. When I select a Playlist to Open in new window, only the Playlist is there, no sidebar. Why do you need other sidebars for each open playlist? That will be like having multiple iTunes windows open.

You might get better use from a different media manager?

Sorry - I wasn't clear enough. One of the 3 is the main iTunes window with sidebar, which is 1. above. I don't need sidebars in the other two, but I do need Search which was there in iTunes 10.

Ah, ok. In Music, there is a Search icon to use, in upper right corner.
