This has happened with just about every Mac model released in the last few years. I know it happened with my 2008 MacBook Pro and I'm pretty sure it was happening before that.
It occurs to me that were Apple to suddenly list the new cumbers that might create a different type of confusion. If Apple admits that the higher memory configuration works I think lots of users would expect Apple to resolve any problems. Someone buys higher density chips that for whatever reason don't work in their system and it becomes Apple's problem to solve.
We know that happens regularly with third-party software.
