im trying to create a couple new shortcuts to open safari and open adium

i went to system pref>keyboard and mouse>keyboard shortcuts and then the + sign at the bottom and picked safari from the applications, typed in "Open Safari" in the field below and the did "control+S" then clicked add. closed system pref quit safari and tried my new shortcut and it doesnt work:(

same goes for adium

am i doing something wrong?

EDIT: oh..and also is there anyway to use hotmail with the "Mail" app that came with the mbp?

Well if I type Control + S in Safari, it sends me to the Quick Reply box and sends it to the board empty which then gives an error message of "The message you have entered is too short. Please lengthen your message to at least 5 characters."

So me thinks that you have just taken a shortcut that are already allocated. Just to be sure, wait a little till you get the hang of OS X and see which shortcuts are already taken then you can choose to make your own.

To give you an idea of shortcuts already taken, take a look at this. If you don't take into account the shortcuts already allocated, you might end up with a big mess on your hands as many usual shortcuts will be messed up.

G'day Indapino22,

MacHeadCase has given some great advice there ^^^. Personally, I have persevered with this technique:

To launch Safari:

Command+SpaceBar (opens SpotLight textbox in top right of screen) then I type Saf and by then it has appeared in the results list and is usually the first entry - so I press the down arrow twice which selects Safari - then I press Enter.

I use the same method to launch other apps. I find this saves me time and has also meant I no longer use QuickSilver.

It does take a little while until you can do this combination of key pressing/typing quickly, but IMHO it's worth it.

So with SpotLight and SizzlingKeys (for iTunes) I'm doing alright.
