I installed 10.6 yesterday, 9/1. It went perfectly, fortunately. I had been worried about my quickcam. (post #189) The logitech quickcam works well.

I am using: Logitech QuickCam Vision Pro for Mac (Black)

No surprises. Am quite pleased and feeling very fortunate. I guess I am surprised at how many of my old programs still work more or less perfectly. Even CanoScan, Canon's clunky old scanner driver is still going.

I notice that SL gets jerky, or stuttery, when handling jpgs and such if RAM gets low. Smoother when more RAM is available. (At least I think that is what's going on.) I can live with it, but I like things smooth and hope that the inevitable updates will fix this.

iStat Menus 2.0 (SL compatible version) has been released. Get it here.

Man, that guy moves quick. Thank goodness. I think I'll put a little tip in his donation jar.

I have to say, now that the issue with Paragon's daemon is now resolved, and iStat Menus is running perfectly once again, I couldn't be happier with Snow Leopard.

The new Expose and Stacks features are well worth the $29. The speed improvement is negligible, but it's there (particularly with boot-up times).

Now, the only outstanding issue I have is with Growl. Apparently it's having some issues with SL, because I see a steady stream of weird messages in the system logs:

Same here. I found Garage Band by searching but couldn't find iLife '08. I guess I'll install it again.

I'm one of the moderators on another online forum and have run into what is a minor inconvenience for me. Regarding Safari, when I try to do some moderating (move a thread, merge threads, etc.) the radio buttons are missing so I can't select the correct action. I've had to resort to using Firefox to do these chores. :Not-Amused: The radio buttons are also missing in any polls that members have posted. What a pain.
Just wondering if going back to an older version of Safari will work until this and most other bugs are fixed.

Although iLife is included with every new Mac, it is not a part of the Mac OS X Operating System and is in fact, a separate software package. You can reinstall it from your System Discs. If I'm not mistaken, it can be found on disc 2.

There are two things that I have come across regarding 10.6.

1) When I reset the PRAM on my MBP (holding down Command+Option+P+R) my account automatically logged in. I have NEVER allowed my computer to log in automatically. I checked the user account login options and sure enough it had changed it. This is a huge security concern for me if every Mac running 10.6 can simply be logged into by just doing a PRAM reset.

2) This is just an annoyance more than anything. I have noticed that when using a custom dock icon for Adium, after quitting Adium, the icon reverts back to the default green duck. Whenever I open it, it goes back to Super Mario, which is how I like it!

Anyone else having these issues/concerns?

On my macbook pro 13 inch, when I do the four finger slide up, my windows are out of view (the way it should be).

Now when I slide down with four fingers (after sliding up with 4 fingers), the windows appear again, then go back up to where they used to be.

Does anyone else have this issue? It seems like this should be fixed ASAP because it is a big glitch (in my opinion).

For anyone who wants to know, I am getting the same battery life if not better. I am at 89% right now and getting 5:15. I am on full brightness and I am surfing the web.

No, it should be updated automatically.

See this thread for good tips in preparation for the Snow Leopard install.

So I had to deal with this snow installation bug this may not happen to u but I got stuck at a black screen after the upgrade but there is a easy way around it…

I have a first gen intel macbook pro and tried to upgrade my leopard to snow… the install seemed to go well mainly worked in a dark screen after about an hour all I could see was a black screen and I was stuck nothing would let me move forward a reboot would just stop at the black screen…

it turned out that the install dimmed the screen brightness and after snow was install it rebooted and I was stuck in the dark… I read somewhere that if I use a flashlight I can see whats going on u can see in the pic below that I found myself stuck at the login screen… then I logged in and I turned the brightness back up… maybe this bug effects certain mbp cos not everyone is complaining about the upgrade but ive seen other people getting stuck with the same prob…

Here are the pics I took with my iphone:

1- snow when it started for the first time was completely dark

2- after i look with the flashlight i see the login screen.

3- after login i turned the brightness up and everything just fine

As far as I know, this is not a "glitch". Basically, you have to do it in a quick, fluid movement. If you kind of drag your fingers slowly, it will snap back to whatever view you had previously (the "issue" you stated). I've been playing with this method and finally got it down. Just takes some practice is all. :)

Hey, just wanted to post my experience with the Snow Leopard install...

My copy arrived just a while ago. (Best Buy's web site told me the stores in my area were out, so I ordered it -- then later that day suddenly three stores had it...arghh!!) I haven't had much of a chance to play around with it; won't until later tonight. But a few initial observations:

- Perfectly smooth install! No problems, no nothin'. Just booted my MacBook (3.1 -- the white one, which I got in December '07 right after Christmas), popped the DVD in and ran the install program. Total time for me: roughly 47 minutes. About 1/3 of the way through the install, the computer reset itself...it quickly became apparent that it's part of the installation process, as it resumed before I even got the login screen. Have to re-boot one more time at the end of the install.

- At first, the fan spun like crazy after I cold booted and opened up Firefox. This seems to only be a temporary thing, as I closed EVERYTHING and cold-booted. I re-opened Firefox again and did some stuff, and the fan was quiet, if moving at all.

- If you move some Apple apps into your own custom folders (for the dock, for instance), you'll have some confusion at first. Safari will tell you you can't run that version of Safari on the version of OSX that's installed. What happens is that the install puts all the updated Apple software into your Applications folder. Move 'em into your custom folders and you'll be fine. (BTW -- Safari is STILL version 4.03 -- it's just a new build specific to Snow Leopard.)

- Shut down was almost instantaneous.

- After a cold boot, the computer's ready to be used noticeably sooner (a LOT sooner) than before.

- Airport -- really cool feature that I didn't notice mentioned anywhere is that if you pull down your Airport menu, not only do you get a list of networks in range, but you also get a signal strength indication. Way cool!

- I heard from someone that the Snow Leopard installation resets your wallpaper to Apple's default wallpaper. I didn't find that to be true in my case. I have mine set to change the wallpaper every 15 minutes, so I wonder if that has anything to do with it...

- All my preferences kept -- didn't need to change anything.

- Colors are a bit sharper.

- I know Toast 10 had some compatibility issues. I have Toast Titanium 8, and it looks like it's fine.

- So there's some controversy that Snow Leopard now calculates storage space in a way such that 1000 bytes = 1kb, 1000kb=1 Mb, 1000Mb=1GB, etc. instead of the real way -- multiplying by 1024 instead of 1000. Even after calculating by 1024, I still have about five or six gigs extra hard drive space. Nice!

Great until...

I have a MacPro 3,1 (dual quad core 2.88ghz).

I upgraded successfully to snow leopard with only a minor warning on the first reboot about system events missing. That went away after another reboot.

For the last week things have run well.

Today I had logic 9 open to record a guitar track for a project I'm involved in. In messing with chords I pulled a firewire cable out of one of my interfaces.

Logic 9 thought about it for a short time then popped up a dialog saying the interface was missing. But after clearing that dialog my primary audio (apogee duet) had power but was not generating any output audio.

I shutdown logic and restarted it but could not get any audio out. So I shutdown the MacPro. Plugged the firewire cable back in, rebooted.

After the boot I reloaded Logic 9... or rather I tried to... It bounced in the dock for a long time then never came up. Force quit showed it as "not responding..."

I tried a few more reboots no luck. I then tried running some other programs and I quickly found out that any program related to audio would hang. So I could not run skype, sys prefs, quicktime, itunes, etc...

I tried many many different things and I have still have not determined if this is hardware or software.

I don't know if this is a snow leopard issue, a hardware issue, or what but it sure is frustrating.

VMFusion and Snow Leopard

I had two machines to update today - and as far as I can tell, at the moment, all went well, except that one machine needed the WEP code inputting to allow access to the router. This didn't happen on the other machine and all went well. On my 24" iMac I have VMFusion under which I run Windows XP as a virtual machine.

Concerned that I might break something, I rang Apple Care to try to find out if there were any issues that I needed to be aware of, with VMFusion on the machine. After a long wait, during which the guy consulted someone else, he came back with the answer, "We don't think it will cause any problems, but you'd better contact VMFusion about it, just in case". In other words, "We don't know." I'd have thought that Apple would have checked for any incompatibilities with VMFusion and Parallels???

So, on to VM - Much the same kind of laid back response. "No, it should be OK just to install". But no evident knowledge that it would be ok! "Right" I said "so I just shut down Fusion and then install?" - note that he had not suggested that I shut down Fusion! But the answer was, "Yes, that's probably a good idea".

I get the feeling that nobody really cared! However, I went ahead - the new OS was up and running in 37 mins (which I thought was pretty good, given that the estimate was 50 mins at the outset) and, so far, apart from that network problem on one machine, anything else I've used seems to function as normal - including Windows XP under VMFusion - so, if you too are wondering - go ahead.

Please take a moment and switch your router over to use WPA.

If you're running WEP, you might as well have no security set up at all. It's so easily hacked, it's worthless. WPA replaced WEP several years ago. It's easier to use, faster and far, far more secure. I honestly don't understand why routers even ship with WEP capability anymore.

cwa107 -- sorry to focus on the network issue, but...what are your thoughts on having NO password/encryption, but setting the router so that it will block access to everything except for specified MAC addresses??? It's the only way I could get the TiVo working properly. :/
