Hmm mine says QuickTime X. I didn't have QuickTime Pro before installing Snow. Sounds like you did. I wonder if you can somehow switch back and forth and by default your Pro version runs?

I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to new software for my mac and such and had one quick question.

When installing Snow Leopard will one lose iLife ('08 in my case) and iWork ('08 as well)? Do you recommend backing up all files, or is the process usually quite sound?

Thanks for your responses. O:)

I just finished installing 10.6...absolutely no hassles!

Just boot up with the 10.6 disk, make your selections...and install.

Alright, great!

I was worried that I would be losing some of my applications.

Thanks!

(Thanks to the mod that moved the thread over to this thread, I hadn't even seen it.)

ok when i open a video from my comp it goes to the new quicktime, now if i play a dvd, or try to play it, i could never play a dvd i don't get it. i open up the dvd icon on my desktop when it pops up, it gives me 2 folders, audio and video, i click video and go to a file thats the biggest, lets say 1 gig, i try to play it and it says its not a movie file and quicktime 7 shows up.... i don't get it and its getting me real frustrated.

edit: it doesn't allow me to use divix or anything else...

Close Quicktime entirely. Open DVD Player from your Applications folder. Click Play and it should start playing.

If you want it to this automatically, go into System Preferences => CDs and DVDs => Change "When you insert a DVD video" to "Open DVD Player".

It took me 1hour and 5 minutes start to stop gave me back 9.66gb of hard drive space and things seem a little snappier and it broke iStumbler. It also runs
5°C warmer.

I can't empty my Trash! I have a ton of junk in there and Finder says that "The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8003)." Any help?

And nextgenerationx, look in your /Applications folder. QuickTime Player should have a different icon. A silver "Q" with a blue in the middle. That's QuickTime X. But I don't seem to have QuickTime 7 anymore.

I completed a Time Machine back up before I installed Snow Leopard. I'm now doing my first back up with Snow Leopard and it calculated 8.3GB of changes. My back ups are wireless using Airport Extreme. Therefore this is going to take a while. No problem because my son's first football game for his last year of high school is tonight. I'll set the back up and head to the game. Pray for my son and his team. He's looking at a possible college scholarship to a major university!! (think NFL and buying daddy a big house!)

Alright then, now that the iLife issue has been answered (I tried calling an Apple Store and now one answered my call!) I think I'm just about set. I've purged 15GB of stuff from my drive and am backing up everything that I don't want to loose to DVD's.

I'm going to go to an authorized retailer sometime next week after school to get it. Or would you guys recommend waiting a bit until Apple has taken care of some issues?

Too many...
I finally ordered my 9.95 upgrade today...after some slight confusion with the apple store because they told me I could come pick it up on the 28th for 9.95 instead of having to do it online, which wasn't showing up on my cart, or through mail/fax. This is TORTURE I tell you!! I waited rather patiently for the 28th...now I have to wait for the delivery....NoOoOoOoO....it's like when I knew I was getting a mac. I guess it's off to youtube to watch some snow leopard reviews...LOL

Because you need to order that online. Apple did it this way to be able to verify that you indeed purchased a Mac during the eligibility window.

Just got finished installing it. Looks good so far. I have a question though. Has anyone been able to figure out how to get multi touch gestures on pre unibody Macbooks? It was a feature that was touted for SL.

OK just upgraded my wife's MacBook, no issues at all. Saved 6GBs of space, which for her is a lot as it only has 60GBs of space to start with.

Still cannot open ZIP files though on either machine.

Broke down and went by the Apple store on the way home and got our 2 copies of SL. Can't install on my machine until a couple of apps I use are updated, so I'm testing it on my wife's Mac. :D She's not home yet.

After 2 installs, I've found:

On my macbook, it installed without a hitch - did its' thing, rebooted, came into SL - a few preference panes didn't work anymore due to incompatibility (blueharvest, istat menus) but I was able to either just not use them or delete them. Never saw an incompatible applications folder, and everything appears to be where it should. Looking at activity monitor, most things running 64bit, a few not - mostly processes from vmware and from FCS2

On my Mac Pro - this one didn't quite go as smooth - sat at a blue screen with a cursor for quite a while before I decided to powercycle reboot the machine. It seems to be ok, and checked the disk and permissions and all appears to be running well.

I did install everything, and did notice that it is much smaller then leopard - people seem to say that it's smaller because you don't install all the printer drivers - the printer drivers are only 860 megs worth of the os for all of them (which I did select to have).

I have noticed reduced performance of COD4 (not a huge drop, but I still can see it on my fps counter in game) - I'm wondering if we won't see real huge graphics performance increases until games or software comes out that really supports opencl.

Some apps have felt a little slower to launch the first time on my mac pro (for example itunes the first launch after upgrade took quite a while, but subsequent launches were 1 bounce and felt faster then from 10.5)

I have mixed feelings about the new quicktime. I do have QT7 on my system as well, but the controls on a small window video do take up a lot of space. I'm also a little disappointed that it doesn't support more formats (like .mkv) out of the box, and perian doesn't support quicktime x, so I'll still be using QT7 and VLC for a bunch of my video files.

Overall it doesn't look much different from the outside, but I do appreciate the unseen changes that will enhance the OS overall, and think that even with some of changes rendering some things incompatible, it's a step in the right direction.

Additional Notes:

I have the Brother MFC-6490CW printer, I had to reinstall the software for it to have network scan functionality back, although the base printer drivers still functioned after the update to SL.

Playing video in the finder is cute.

Im the only one hating the new expose and the way it arranges windows now? a grid? seriously?

I have two overlapping finder windows on a side, i bring expose and they go right in the middle, far away from where my cursor was sitting. I mean, yeah it may not sound like a big deal, but that was just an example, i found myself in a couple of situations where i couldn't find the window i wanted, thats cause it got resized and align at the opposite side of the screen.

Putting that on the side, i'm really liking dock expose and the improved stacks a lot.

Cant tel if everything seems snappier, but i did get like 25Gb of HD back, and that was worth the update.

Really pleased with SL so far. At first i was worried of a flawless install, couldn't believe that i only had to hit next a couple of times (besides unchecking printer drivers and foreign languages and fonts) and i was boot right back at where i was.

Got the wife's machine done. Showed her how you can scroll in grid view now and she's sold. She's so easy.
