I am trying to select multiple rows in excel i.e. A47 to the end.
I've tried Shift + ctrl + down arrow, this does nothing!

Click, Shift, scroll, Click should work to select multiple cells, as should click, hold and drag.

If you're working on a formula, another option is to click the first cell, then hover over the lower right corner of that cell. When the cursor changes to a box, click and drag to the lower right corner of the last cell.

Fn + Shift + Down arrow will select all rows from the selected cell to the end, but in a single column. (This is in Excel 2016 for Mac.)
