Secure USB

I need help! I'm wanting to secure a USB stick so that it will work on both mac & windows the only thing is, I don't want to have to download any extra software for me to do this. I've managed to do it before using disk utility but I just can't manage to figure out how I did it.
It'd be great if someone could point me in the right direction!
