Hello. I'm new to both Macintosh and these forums. I have searched my my issue but came up with nothing.

I just purchased a MBP 13" Mid 2009. It has a 2.53GHz C2D, 8GB RAM and a 1TB HDD. I ran Apple Hardware Test on simple mode, and alkl looked fine. I went into the OS (ElCap) and played around with the internet on wifi, hidef videos, and generally navigating around. No problems.

I decided to wipe the drive for security and did this sub-os by starting the disk utility at boot and stated a 2-pass secure erase on the partition of the drive that holds the OS.

It all looked fine, but the status never changed from "starting secure erase" to anything else. While the progress bar took a ew hours to get to about 4/5 of the way along, that's where is has stayed for the last 16 hours.

The system itself does not appear to be hung, though I can't do anything outside the disk utilities program. I don't know what I should do here.

Cheers and thanks for any help!
D

What is "sub-os" and you likely don't need to do a secure erase. Power down the Mac, get back to where you were and do a regular erase and move on.

Ahh, that's the "Recovery Console". Calling it that will make sure we are all talking about the same thing.
