Screen capture from DVD movie goes gray.

I'm running under Mavericks 10.9.5.

My input is a DVD created from a DVR, and it contains a single folder called VIDEO_TS which expands to other files with .BUP, .IFO, AND .VOB extensions.

Just inserting the DVD brings up the DVD Player and everything works fine, until I start a New Screen Recording under QuickTime. That grays out the screen and that's what gets recorded -- gray. (This same thing started happening when I was using Snapz Pro X to do the capture.) Both techniques used to work fine. I can't say if it started failing when I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mavericks.

This failure does NOT occur if my input has a .mov extension.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

It's to do with copyright/DRM on dvds. Even with a homemade dvd from iMovie, I get a grey screenshot.

But unless I'm totally discombobulated (which is entirely possible) this same situation worked since I bought Snapz Pro X and more recently, since I learned about QuickTime. Come to think of it, I recall using Snapz to record Webinars, not DVDs. Maybe I'm imagining things.

Do you have a reasonable solution for this? Since I have both Mac and Win7, I can run either way.

Just come across something that says it's a feature of using Apple's DVD Player. Apparently if you use VLC to play your dvds, screenshots work ok, although I haven't tried it.

And as an extra bonus, it makes it easy to switch my squeezed 4:3 aspect ratio to the normal 16:9.

thanks for the useful solution, I was wondering why my DVD movie recording turns black after using this Mac screen recorder, and I tried to open the DVD in VLC as MightyGem said, click "open disc", then play the movie and record it, it works! It's really awesome.

I've used MPEG Streamclip for this task several times. It allows you to open the .vob files , look at the video, grab a segment and save it in another format. The advantage is that you don't have to go through real time playback.

I've never tried it with copy protected material but it works fine for "normal" DVDs. Here's the article I wrote about it ATPM 12.03 - How To: Performing a Video Extraction. The article is a little old but the process is the same.
