I'm running Mac OS 10.10.1 and using Safari 8.01 (10600.1.25.1).

Not quite sure when the issue began, but noticing safari will automatically open when logging in to the system. This is random and not happening on every boot or login. A window or page will not appear, but I can see the dot below the icon in my dock or when I try to log out or reboot I'll get hung up and will then have to force quit safari to proceed.

Any suggestions as how I'd go about fixing this?

Start your Mac, then click the Apple logo upper left corner, and Shut down. A window will open to confirm you want to shut down. Make sure the box is NOT checked where it says "Reopen windows when logging back in."

Thanks Jake. Should have mentioned that was something I tried early on. Something is causing it to open arbitrarily regardless of shutting down properly.

Maybe adware is trying to take you somewhere on startup. Download AdwareMedic and run that. Keep us posted?

no, checked that as well.

Just a hint here.... when you ask for help, let us know what you've already tried and what didn't work. Otherwise we wind up playing question and answer with you. After a couple of those, you'll likely lose any support that you might have received.

Thanks chscag. My apologies. The small steps I took seemed insignificant when placing the request but now can see where I went wrong. Hopefully you can accept my apology. Lesson learned.

So, I have disabled all my extensions. Made certain nothing was set to system preferences under login items. I have also tried the AdwareMedic which came up clean.

Something is triggering the application to auto launch but never landing on a page. If I knew where it was trying to go I may be a little wiser as to what the issue is. It does not happen on every start up and can occur on back to back boot ups and then not occur through the next four to eight boots.

I've run and EtreCheck and posting the results here in hopes someone catches something:

Problem description:
Safari is trying to open arbitrarily on reboot, cold startup or login. This seems to occur about 50% of the time. No pages load, the process is getting hung up and requiring a force quit. I have run AdwareMedic, verified safari is not in the list of Sys Pref Login items, turned ALL safari extensions to OFF and verified that the Reopen window when logging back in is not checked.
