The 'Open Location' window has disappeared and 'Open Location' is greyed out in the File Menu. All I can see at the top are the items in the Bookmark Bar. I have Safari 5.1.8 and OS 10.6.8 on my MPB. I've run Onyx to no avail and I've reset Safari. Should I uninstall Safari and reinstall it via Firefox or Chrome? Suggestions greatly appreciated.

I think what you are actually saying is that your URL address bar has disappeared, and that you can only see the Bookmarks bar. Like this perhaps?

No-URL-bar-Safari.jpg

If so, I know exactly what happened and how to fix it.

What happened: you accidentally hit option-command-t.
How to fix it: hit them again.

Thanks, Chas for your reply. Yes, the URL bar has vanished.
However, when I'm in Safari and I hit
alt-cmd-t
I get a box which enables me to create various special characters.
The URL bar is unfortunately still not there.

I just tried Option+Command+T and the bar came and went. Are you holding down Option and Command then tapping T? That is what i did with the results Chas mentioned.

Ah Ha, you are using a much older version of Safari. I just booted my G4 Mini with 10.5.8 and get that Character panel. Will be back with the right key combo!

On your older version of Safari Try Command+Shift+ the key with the | on it usually above the Return Key. That works here and does what Chas was talking about. That key has \ and | on it. Hope that makes sense.

Or simply click on the View in the top bar and on Show Toolbar!

No, I've tried your latest and that makes the space at the top increase in size but the URL bar is still not there. The other thing that makes me wonder is that in the File Menu at the very top of the screen, the 'Open Location' field is greyed out. This is the one which has the shortcut Cmd+L.

Hit View and then Customize Toolbar. When the window opens look for the URL bar and drag it up to where it's supposed to go and let go. If that is missing the Open Location is also grayed out.

Let me know if that solves it. Did here and then Open Location was no longer grayed out.

Yes, Bingo! Sorry for the delay but breakfast was on the table.
Thanks for your last suggestion, which did the trick.
All is now back as it should be.
I'm most grateful for your help.

Just a further comment. What on earth did I do to cause the URL bar to vanish?

GREAT. Glad that solved it. Enjoy!

It's possible while clicking and dragging when in a hurry to drag it off the browser. Just a guess but that is the way I have seen it happen. Otherwise the Command+Shift+| would have brought it back.
