cradom - Good news, I restarted and Terminal in dock went away.
Bad news, Safari.app back on desktop. Evidently, the Safari.app in my applications is the alias, as safari won't run with the desktop app in the trash. Even when I left it in the trash and unzipped safari, the Safari.app went to the desktop. I seem to be going in circles hear so finally decide I can live with the Safari.app on my desktop. I don't haves a copy of OSX to reinstall... it came on the computer... although I did buy the upgrades.

When you unzipped, it unzipped to the desktop. IS there a Safari icon in the Applications folder? If so, drag it to the trash. Then move the Safari.app from the desktop to the Applications folder. Finally, you'll need to drag the Safari icon from the dock into the middle of the desktop and let it go poof. The reason for doing all this is that the icon in Applications is an alias and you need to get it out of that folder for the app. Then you move the app to the right location, but then the alias in the Dock is pointing in the wrong direction, so you delete that. If you want Safari on the dock, open the app that now should be in the Applications folder and then right click on the new Dock icon and choose for it to stay on the Dock.

When I attempt to drag either Safari.app to the trash I get this: "Safari.app can't be modified or deleted because it is required by OS X. Being I got the Desktop safari.App by dragging it from applications. I figured just drag it back to Applications. But it won't let me. I also can drag the desktop Safari app to there trash. But the when I hit the Safari icon it says: The item "Safari.app can it be moved to the trash because it's open. So I have to move it back to the desktop. Going in circles here. But thanks for the input.

Problem solved. First I turned off Safari. Then moved desktop Safari.app to trash. Then moved Safari icon to desktop...poof. Then I went to Applications folder to where I had moved Safari.app.zip. I unzipped it within applications. Then moved the Safari.app to the dock. Emptied they trash.
Restarted computer. Everything back to normal.
When earlier I unzipped Safari.app.zip, partway through solving this problem, it was on my desktop. This caused the app to reappear on my desktop. Moving the zip to the Applications folder was the key.
Thanks to everyone who posted help on this topic.
