Running APFS File Check from Disk Utility

If you run it on the container is it necessary to do the volumes? It appears running it on the container does do the volumes but I'm not sure.

Hello - I'm assuming that you mean using 'First Aid' in the Disk Utility app? If so, check out Howard Oakley's article from the website below - had to read it twice but as usual an excellent concise discussion - other 'experts' will likely chime in with advice - good luck. Dave

If I read this correctly you have to check the volumes and containers and disks in that order. He does say checking the container rechecks the volumes and may find errors the volume check missed. Bottom line is it appears just checking the container doesn't necessarily completely check the volumes. It is interesting that he goes bottom up and actually specifies that is the way to go. Also, I never thought about checking the disks. I suppose that might be important if you have several containers but I'm not sure about one. Still, it is fairly quick and only a minor inconvenience.
