Rumor of something good happening april 2?

I am Spanking brand new to macs. I just sold my IBM and recieved 1200 dollars for it. I am going for a macbook thats 1299. I was told from a guy at MicroCenter, a huge computing store, that I should wait until april 2nd to buy the macbook becasue april is Mac Month. I then called apple directly and they said if anything, that would be strictly rumor. Apple also told me that since they dont get commission at the store that the information he is giving is truth and that he isnt losing or gaining anything from what he tells me. Apple said that it wouldnt make a difference to buy it today or the 2nd. Has anyone heard anything on April? Thanks in Advance!

I just want to clear some things up for you.. apple store employees do not make commission.. microcenter employees DO make commission.. I have a friend that works at one 3 miles away from my condo. Apple is very very tight lipped about future products that will be released.. long story short, whatever that guy told you is just a rumor and nothing more..

thanks, I really don't want to wait, i heard to much good things about macs. if anything does happen, i still have that 14 day policy that i could switch with a minor restocking fee. thanks!

there is always something new around the corner.. no matter when you buy your mac something new will be coming out 3-6 months after you buy it.. you can't win. If I were you, I would just buy it when you need it rather than waiting for something new.

Remember you can return your Mac within 14 days of purchase so if something does come out on the second you can swap it.

i know that a portion of the HD is used, but dahm...it says 111gb and 17gb used leaving me with a much smaller disk size.

MacBook black is very classy...

The reason is that OS X take up a fair bit of space from the install as well as the apps loaded with the machine.

Hey,

I just want to add a counterpoint to the 'buy it now, new is always around the corner' message.

There are times when it's a lot more probable that something new is truly only around the corner (1-2 months), and times when it's likely to be 3-9 months away. Apple can always suprise us, but usually there is some 'cyclicality' to their upgrades. ie, if they just upgraded the MacBook in the winter it is unlikely they will upgrade it again in the spring.

Here's the rub with your particular question. The MacBook and MacBook Pro were two of the first machines to get Core 2 processors. They are coming due for some kind of a bump. On top of that, there is the impending release of OS X 10.5 My guess would be, you'll see a spate of upgrades ranging from minor to major to the entire Mac line in the next 3 months.

That said, the entire macbook and macbook pro line are still fine machines and I see no reason they can't serve well for many years to come. Still, there are some important potentials for bumps right now - for the macbook, I think we could well see the new X3000 integrated graphics, larger hard drives, and of course OS X 10.5 Depending on budget, what you use a mac for, and how much of a hurry you're in, that could well be worth waiting for.

very true and something to think about. i already bought one, but i am very good at selling and buying. I barely paid for the macbook and the ibm I sold was a given from someone. i do the same with my cell phones and etc to keep up with technology. but i diff understand both the buy it now and wait logics. thanks for all your help everyone!!

to keep from making another post, I would like to know if when closing the lid on my macbook, would imprints of the keyboard burn onto the screen? I was thinking if i could put the piece of thin paper it came with or by a protector in between the screen and keyboard when i close it. I was skeptical because i heard that the heat runs throught the keyboard and I dont want to block any escaping heat. thanks.

Just looking at SilviaBoston's comment on hard drive space, i'm relatively new to Mac's as well. Just got my iMac 20 Monday, but had a G4 400Mhz desktop for about 6 months before. Anyway.

One place I found that OSX takes up gobs of memory is all the different languages for the Apps. If you go into your Apps, and Get Info on Safari or anything in there, go down to Languages and you'll see about 30 different languages is there. I just clicked on English, Apple-A to Select All, then Apple-clicked English (no, i don't know what that thing is called) to remove it from the chosen, then click Remove to erase all the other languages.

If you do that for everything in the Apps folder, it's a few thousand files that should give you at least a full Gig back. I think I got 1.7G before I emptied my Trash. That's as far as I've gone 'cause i'm still learning the language and structure of the OS, but I actually got that tip on this forum quite some time ago.

You have a month to return an Apple computer in order to exchange for an updated model. That's what happened to me and a friend at the Apple store in the Bullring, Birmingham in the UK.

We had both gotten Core Duo Macbook Pro's and about 3 weeks and 5 days later the Core 2 Duo MBP's came out, we both had our MBP's changed for the C2D models without question purely on the basis that the newer model came out within a month of our purchases.

The 120 in the HD size refers to the total space in bytes, i.e 120,000,000,000 bytes of space on the platters (thats what the discs inside the liitle bugger are called, you can have multiple platters in a single drive).

A Kilo-Byte on the other hand is measured in 1024 byte increments and a Mega-Byte is 1024 KBs etc.

111 Giga-Bytes = 111x1024x1024x1024 = 120 billion Bytes.

On top of this a certain portion of the drive contains the formatting information (i.e the directory structure). This is typically a few percent of the total size although it varies for different formats.

All this means that a freshly formatted 120gb drive actually contains around 106 Giga-Bytes (GB)of free space.

OS X uses around 11GB for a full default installation plus space for each user area.

I don't know why HD manufacturers count the bytes differently but thats the world we are stuck with.

is that one of the reasons why spotlight is so fast what else is it need for cos there's a big difference between the amount of space used in formating a mac and a pc
