I would like to be able to rotate the built-in display on this macbook 90°. However when I go to Displays in the System Preferences app, the option for screen rotation is not present. Searching the web for solutions found multiple sites suggesting I hold option + command while opening System Preferences and Displays. All that does is slow down the animations of the page loading. No new options are revealed when I hold those keys.

So how do I rotate the display on this macbook?

It "yes & no" works for me.

Try:

1. Open "System Preferences".
2. Now press & hold the Option + Command Keys (don't hold these keys down before this step).
3. Click on the "Display" System Preference.

Here's what I get when I do it:

* I'm on a 2017 15" MacBook Pro running Catalina.
* Also works on my 2011 MacBook Air with High Sierra.
* Does not seem to work on a 2015 MacBook Air running Monterey.

From the Info button in Displays:
If you can’t see the Rotate pop-up menu, either your display or your computer doesn’t support this feature.
My M1 MBA doesn't have the option.

Yeah, when I do that no new options appear. It just causes the fade-in animation of switching to the display options window to happen slowly, for some reason.

So I am still unable to rotate my display.

So I am still unable to rotate my display.

Hopefully this suggestion may help fix the problem:

Rotate built-in screen on 2020 MacBook Air
SOLUTION (thanks to r3dd1tdud3): Hold Option and open System Preferences and, still holding Option, click on Displays for the setting to appear.
Just for anyone else following this tip: you need to hold Option when you click to open System Preferences AND when you click on Displays for the setting to appear.

Here's hoping...
Otherwise give Apple a call or drop them a note at there report a problem site.

Ah that worked, thank you! Hold option (and not command) while both opening system preferences, and clicking on display settings.

Makes me wonder what other hidden settings this obscure keystroke combination might reveal!

So that's good news, I am glad to hear it works for you. Thanks for the note.

It makes me wonder if they have updated their Help instructions for Monterey. And I wonder why they changed it???
