Hello,

I have a very important file which I'm trying to restore.
the file was here: /Users/eligreenberg/Library/Safari/LocalStorage , and the last time he was modified is 10th of April.
In the local storage folder i can see files that was modified from the 12th of April.
I was trying to use Time machine, but time machine doesn't restore the local storage folder.
any advice or idea of how i can restore that file???

Good Morning, eli and a warm welcome to Mac-Forums.

Actually, I think there is a way to recover your data via Time Machine (TM). Or, at least, I have just been able to in a test run on my Mac.

Try this:

Close all windows on your Mac, with just the Desktop showing.

Open Finder. From the top menu, Click on Go whilst holding down the Option key. This should reveal "Library" in the drop down. If it doesn't, then Click on Go holding down the Shift key. Click on "Library".

It will open a new window. From the list on the right, Click on Safari, and from there, Click on Local Storage. Stop.

With that Window showing; now go to the top menu bar and Click on the TM icon. From the drop down, choose Enter Time Machine.

Let it settle. From the right side, on the Time Line, choose a date when you believe the data was present. Wait. TM will open a window which should be exactly matched to what you did before and "Local Storage" should be shown.

You have the choice of finding the precise File and restoring OR restoring the whole Local Storage File. Up to you. (I tend to advise the whole lot rather than picking bits & pieces.)

Either way - when you are satisfied that you have found the missing file - Click on Restore (bottom right).

Then cancel out of TM.

As I said above, this worked for me just now. Worth a go?

Good luck. Please post back.

Thank you very much for the response.

This is exactly what i was trying to do before posting here.

The problem is that it doesn't matter how many backups i do, my time machine can go back until the 17 of April and not more than that.

any advice what to do?

my time machine can go back until the 17 of April and not more than that for any folder not just for the local storage folder.

Hello again.

Well if Time Machine (TM) doesn't go any further back, then that's when your TM backups started.

TM starts by backing up your entire system, then hourly, or as you choose, carries out an incremental BU of just those things which have changed since the last BU.

From what you post, your first TM BU was 17 April. If there's nothing else before that, you are stuck.

All I intended to demonstrate was that TM does BU Safari Storage Folder. Your first post seemed to suggest that TM didn't do this.

If I'm not clear, please ask away.

there is other solution you might suggest for me?

Well not from Time Machine (TM) anyway, as it apparently doesn't go far enough back in time.

The File you require dates from before 10 April because you say that's when it was last modified. TM started 17 April.

We don't pry on this Forum, but is there any hint you could give as to the nature of the File? No evasion of privacy intended. And you are sure of where it was before and equally sure it isn't there now?

If the original was modified and now altered, and you've no BU to that time period; then I think it is lost for good. I'm really sorry.

If you hold "option" while clicking on the Time Machine icon in the top menu bar, do you have "browse other backup disks" as an option? Give that a try, to see if Time Machine hiccuped and started a new backup structure. It happened to me previously, and all my files were still accessible.
