Also consider the HD. If it's not an SSD, but a spinner, you are better off not upgrading. Spinners don't do that well with the new APFS format that Catalina (and Mojave) use.

My wife's iMac is a 2011 model. I haven't updated it beyond 10.13.6. Should I update it to Catalina?

No, High Sierra (10.13.6) is the maximum version of macOS that computer can be updated to.

I was just about to mention that little fact, which should save them any hassles... And probably doesn't need any of the "new features" anyway... if the 2011 iMac could even use them... :D

Actually, the 2011 iMac was a good machine. I purchased one new back in 2011 (21.5" model) and used it until I purchased a 2013 27" model. I gave the 2011 to my granddaughter who is still using it today. It did need a hard drive change but that was easy on that model. Also, the 2011 21.5" model was the last 21.5" model that could have the memory upgraded by the user.

Alwyn, I agree completely, I dont use iCloud Photo Library either (or I would need a lot more than 50Gb) I do have My Photo Stream on because it makes sharing my photos to my other devices a breeze. I too like to keep my backups local.

Thanks everyone. I think we'll hang on to her iMac 'cos it has a DVD drive.
