Removing these annoying things!

Okay.. So I'm having a huge memory problem right now. 80gb's, typical! Anyway.. my 160gb runs EXTREMELY slow although its the same RPM as my macbook's HD. Anyway lets not go into that.

Okay, first thing I've noticed would be this.

I dont like those cache's to appear when I want to search for something. Gets pretty annoying somtimes.

Okay, second thing. I've got 80gb's. Looking at it in a way. I've got like okay.the OS 6gb maybe? 16gb of design files, adobe programs would be around 1.4gb, office would be around 800mb, I then have like okay.. 8gb of music, around 4gb of camera shots and 2gb of videos? Then I'll just assume another 20gb for other programs and such. ( I don't install much, I only use Office, Adobe stuffs and the stuffs which comes on my mac ) It only adds up to 52gb+. But it says that I've got only 6gb left?

Could someone clarify this for me?

WhatSize could tell you what's being used for what. Not sure about the first thing.

I have CS3 and having a quick peek it's definitely over 1.4GB. Get Info for you Applications folder and see how much is in there?

Its only 7.62gb. Very odd isn't it?

Okay, I have confirmed 32.28gb for my home folder which includes my designs, music and such. Then 7.62gb for all my other additional stuffs .

So a total of 40gb.

Where else can I look?

System and Library. I wouldn't get rid of anything in there though

Check iTunes hasn't also created duplicates of you music.

Can't think of much else really...

Have you taken into account that you lose some of you drive space when you format it? An 80GB HDD won't have an 80GB capacity.

Here's mine (it's a 160GB).

I have a 250GB hard drive, my applications folder is 7GB and my home folder is 22GB - I have 168GB available - there is over 50GB not taken into account.

My point is, it is quite normal, as skaheadpunk says, you have to take into account that the formatted space is less and also the OS itself takes up quite a lot of space.

As for the other problem about searching, if you take a look in the spotlight preferences, you might be able to change that if it is a certain file type you want to not show.
