I have four 3.5 " hard drives & one 2.5 " laptop hard drive. All are formatted NTFS. I have a Thermaltake Docking Station. I just put the 2.5 " laptop drive in & Mavericks didn't complain. I think that OS X can read NTFS, but not write NTFS, right? FAT32 is readable & writable by OS X, right? OS X will format a drive to FAT32, right?

Correct. OS X can read from NTFS but not write. FAT-32 is both read and write for OS X. We recommend the Paragon driver in order to write to a NTFS formatted drive or partition. The driver sells for $19.95 and is available as a download from Paragon Software. I'm not sure the driver has been updated for Yosemite yet so be sure to check that if you're interested in buying it.

Personally, keep all my drives that will go back and forth between Windows and OS X formatted as NTFS. The Paragon driver makes it painless and transparent.

I wish that I had the wherewithal to develop a truly universal file system. It would be reliable & robust. If the OS crashed it would recover without having to scan the hard drive like FAT32. Every OS would be able to use it. Oh well, I can dream can't I?
