Hello,
I have some old photos ( .pvm ) that I want to import to my Photos library in Ventura. Is there a viewer app out there that I can use to do this conversion?

Regards,
Bull

From a web search:

"PVM file Extension is primarily used by the Image Zone software created by Hewlett-Packard (HP). Files of this extension are image files with stored on a folder or album with information about it. These albums are in XML format and contain information about the images it is stores. PVM can run on Windows operating system.

PVM file extension is mostly generated when importing images from a CD or digital devices for viewing purposes. Once HP Image Zone software is activated, it will automatically rename files with extension such as .jpg to its native extension .pvm. This file can also be created using Hewlett-Packard digital camera software.

Files with this extension mostly appear as "album.pvm" or "index.pvm". These are files containing information about those images stored on it. This is mainly use for sharing image files and transferring them to any portable media such as CDs and DVDs. In addition, PVM files can also be generated by other digital devices including printers and digital cameras. Another standard using the same file extension was developed by Optical Storage Technology Association (OSTA) to manage digital content including images, music, and video using XML format.

Aside from HP Image Zone Express, you can open PVM file with Photosmart software which is a replacement for the earlier version."

It would appear there are 2 sources that that can create .pvm files, but are both compatible? I've never come across this file type before. I wonder how old the .PVM files are, shame the original .jpg files were not retained. It seems the .PVM format was introduced long ago back in 2003.

From the same web source, but not very helpful:

"Open PVM file on macOS
  • Find a PVM file in question in Mac OS Finder and double click on it to launch the corresponding application.
  • If a PVM file is not opened in a Mac OS application and you instead get a "There is no application set to open the file" error message you can click on "Search App Store" in the error dialog and Mac OS will show you applications compatible with PVM file.
  • If you know the Mac OS application which can work as PVM file opener you can choose the "Choose Application..." option in the error box to associate the file extension and open PVM file in it.
  • If you don't know the application which can open PVM file then try to search for "PVM viewer", "application to open PVM file" or "read PVM file" queries in the online search engine you like.
  • Install the application you found and check if it can read PVM file"

I have 4 Macs, most recent 2020, 13.3 MacBook Air running on osMac 10.15.3
Thanks for your input.
I am a Mac user since 1992. When I downloaded Ventura, it was like switching to a new OS. Can anyone say they were able to understand it ? Everything was different. In my opinion Apple upgrade their OS far too often. Where as Microsoft only recently brought out Windows 11 after about 2 years on Windows 10.

Despite being a Mac user since 1992, and never used Windows ever.

I have had to return 3 new MacBook Airs, because their Tech Support told me I could move applications from my 2019. MacBook Air using a cable with a USB at both ends, I would be able to use Migration Assistant. Each time it failed, so I am moving to a Windows 11 PC. I hope I will not regret it.

I would never use Google as a search engine, they track you and it has been reported that they sell your emali address. I use Duck,Duck Go, much safer
