Puzzling mouse behavior

All too often -- and always without warning or discernible action on my part -- the material on the screen greatly expands far beyond the edges of the screen. It seems to me that this occurs when my hand is on the mouse, even only touching it (not moving it, R or L clicking, or...). I am unable to return to normal size. If I'm on a website I can often back-arrow < to the previous screen, but > only returns me to the enlarged page. I've changed batteries in the mouse, been careful about how I maneuver it, but still cannot solve this. Advice?

Are you using the Apple Magic Mouse? If so, go to System Preferences and check the Mouse preference pane. Look at the Smart Zoom setting and watch the animation to see f that describes what's happening. If it is checked that may be the reason. Uncheck that setting.

I think that Slydude is onto the solution. But in case his solution doesn't work for you, the next time it happens, try hitting:

Command - Option - "negative sign key"

You can hit this key combination several times if doing it once doesn't shrink things down enough.
