Let me explain a little about my ethics ...
Thanks so much for all the fantastic feedback! It is greatly appreciated. :biohazard
Let me explain a little about my ethics with regards to helping out when I can here at Mac-Forums...
Basically, I know very little about computers. This is true. I haven't been a Mac user for all that long. In fact I was still using OS 7 a very short while ago, before jumping up to OS 8.6 and then leaving Macs for a stint with Windows XP. It's this stint that prepared me for my re-entry to Macs when I lashed out and bought my then dream machine; an Imac G5 running OS 10.4.4.
I have struggled pretty badly with the learning curve, and it became fairly obvious to me that I didn't cope well when things went pear-shaped and I turned to the internet for help.
I'm the sort who likes to get his hands greasy, banging my head on the bonnet (hood) as well as putting up with ocassionally knocking a bit of skin off a few knuckles, so handing my computer to another person wasn't my style.
I eventually realised that the best learning experience for me personally, was to give to others that which I expected to receive myself; I needed a little bit more explaining than some and sometimes a whole lot more explaining and even "hand holding" when I (More often than not) really struggled.
The few times I actually did stike it lucky and found a kind soul prepared to go that 'extra mile' with me, not only left a long lasting feeling of gratitude but also frustration when I realised that on the whole, people just don't have the time and that receiving the type of help I usually required was always going to be the "luck of the draw".
By being a part of the Mac-Forums community, I've learnt that my motivation to help out those either well and truly stuck with an issue, that just want a quick solution or haven't the energy to search the web ... benefits the person seeking an answer or guidance and has a flow-on benefit for the M-F community ... AND helps me move on from being that person who turns to forums demanding an answer, without giving anything back in return.
I may have been lousy and selfish at troubleshooting my own computer issues in the past, but my determination to get to the bottom of an issue - to experience the problem as though I was the person asking the questions - has and will continue to take me further and further away from who I used to be.
Most importantly for me ... regardless of how many posts I have or rep points I have to my name (BTW, I'm SO happy the Rep System has been disabled) .... the very people who turn to M-F for help, especially those who can't get their head around modern computers and softare/hardware - represent a mirrored reflection of myself and it's working with this mirrored reflection - coupled with but not dependant on, appreciation shown when the problem is solved - that the REAL motivator for me being a member here and is much more significant to me than any rep point count positive OR negative, or post count that I may have accumulated as a result of being a member of Mac-Forums.
If, along the way I get to be MotM one month and banned the next .... well, that's all part of the journey to me.
