This morning my track pad stuck. Nothing worked to unstick it. The computer heated up considerably in my opinion. I went ahead and turned it off. It worked okay after powering back up.

I sort of think maybe this wasn't the proper method to deal with this?
What action should I have taken? It really got very hot.

What do you mean by "stuck?" What was running? Any other symptoms other than "stuck?" Any messages. Overheating is normally driven by the CPU/GPU having to work hard at something, which may also make the machine unresponsive. So, what was running at the time? Anything newly installed or updated?

Nothing newly installed or updated.
Mail, Safari and messages open. No spinning ball.
The arrow was stuck in one place. There was no "give" to the track pad. It was immobile if that makes sense.

It may be the battery swelling. Since it's a relatively new MBP and you say you have Apple Care, I would suggest taking it to the nearest Apple store and have them take a look at it. If the battery is swollen, it should be replaced.
