I am wondering what the advantage in acquiring a Mac Pro 2.66 over a Mac Pro 3.0. I have an opportunity to acquire the 3.0 8 core for a very reasonable cost.

You need to specify what exact model Mac Pro's you are talking about. There were multiple 2.66ghz and 3.0ghz Mac Pro models.

Mac Pro 2.66 quad core vs Mac Pro 3.0 8 core

Nick, thanks for the quick reply, the Mac Pro 2.66 that I was referring to is version 1.1 quad core currently it is running with 16 gig Ram. The Mac Pro 3.0 that I am considering is, I believe ver 2.1 8 core with 5 gig Ram.

Good deal…thanks for clarifying!:)

There really isn't much difference between these two Mac Pro models. For it to make a "real" difference…you would need to be getting a Mac Pro 3,1.

I see in your profile you already have a Mac Pro 1,1. For about $100 and some elbow grease…you can purchase a pair of 3.0ghz quad core cpu's (8-cores, x-5365 cpu's) and upgrade your Mac Pro 1,1…and it will basically be the same as an 8-core 3.0ghz Mac Pro 2,1.

p.s. Of course…you can purchase this Mac Pro 2,1 for not much more than $100…then go for it.:)

Don't bother as Nick says with a 2.1 3GHz you will not notice the 10% difference..

At least a 3.1 64bit architecture machine, and a 4.1/5.1 if the readies will extend that far.

do a huge favor on this once you get it verify it's not a firmware hacked mac pro or a upgraded processor mac pro the reason is if they just upgraded the processor the mac app store will only recognize your original machines configuration which won't do you any good on installing o.s

Now for the good thing in this if the machine is running check the graphics card most people are getting rid of this machine because the graphics card is not maverick compatible nor yosemite.
