I've just switched from Linux so some things are a bit different.

How do I put a shortcut on the desktop? (not the dock or launchpad)

and How do I remove a shortcut from Launchpad?

also...in Finder - Applications..if Imove a program to trash is it permanantly deleted or just disabled?

Thanks Chris

First, to make a shortcut of a Application on the Desktop, go into Finder> Applications right click the App you want on Desktop, then choose 'Make Alias' then drag the Alias to the Desktop, and you will notice a little curved arrow depicting it as a Alias.

Next, you can't delete anything from the Launchpad, unless you Delete the Application form the Application folder. When you do Delete a App from there, it will just Trash the Application, and won't be deleted, completely off your system, until you Empty Trash.........

HTH some.

There is a product called Launchpad Cleaner that claimed it could remove icons from Launchpad, let you sort them, etc. Don't know if it worked or if it works with Yosemite, but you could search for it.
