Hi, after having a dead hard drive, I bought a new one for my Macbook pro.

I installed the new drive, everything went fine.

Now It's time to put my install disk in it.

I put the disk in, put the computer on. After about 30 seconds the Apple appears with the rolling circle. I hear the hard drive working.

After a few minutes, I get asked what language I want to use. I select one.

Then after a few more minutes, I see the background appearing and then the computer turns off.

What can I do? Do I need to format the drive? All I can find on forums is: "go to disk utility" but I can't go, I never get around to the point of finding disk utility.

thanks for your help

The new hard drive has to be prepared in order to install the operating system on it. And yes, after placing the new hard drive in the machine, you need to boot with your original install DVD, select the language, and then go to the top menu and select "Utilities", "Disk Utility" in order to format the drive.

What version of OS X do you have and tell us about your machine? What year and model of MacBook Pro is it?

Thanks for helping.

My macbook is a 2.2ghz, core2 duo, 2gb, 128mb Vram with leopard.

Problem is, when I'm asked for the language, there is no top menu.

All there is, is a big square, with OS X written on top, where I'm asked which language I want to choose for my system. I have 20 languages and an arrow at the bottom. I choose my language, i press on the arrow and my hard drives works for 3-4 minutes and then computer shuts down.

I never get to see a top menu, the only place where I have a choice is when selecting the language.

There could be several reasons that's happening:

The Leopard disk you're using is defective or the wrong one for your machine.
Is it the original Leopard install disk that came with your MacBook?

The optical drive is not working correctly.

Or perhaps the hdd cable has fractured during the removal and replacement process. On any laptop when replacing the drive, it is advisable to replace the power/sata cables.

yes it is the right disk. It works well until it asks for language, then works for many more minutes and then computer turns off.
Even if the DVD is defective, would that cause the computer to turn off?

Any other way to format the disk? I'm out of solutions.

Just to keep you posted, I went to the apple store and the problem was my install disc that was damaged. They plugged in a hard drive and installed leopard in minutes. So everything is now fine. Thanks for all the help
