Problem with iTunes

I have a G3 iMac (old but a lovely bit of kit!) and run OS 10.4.1 on it. I have iTunes 8.2.1 and recently when I try to access the iTunes store, I get a screen inviting me to download iTunes 10. I cannot seem to progress beyond this screen.

I can't download iTunes 10 because it's not compatible with my OS; I can't upgrade my OS as, it would appear, my old computer is not compatible with Snow Leopard and the like.

I've hunted high and low for a solution - and I do not intend to buy a new Mac just yet - and can't find one.

Can anyone help? Any assistance would be gratefully received; thank you.

Are you sure you're on 10.4.1 and not 10.4.11?

Sorry, one 1 too few! I'm on 10.4.11.

One of the first things I tried was running the Software Update, but that didn't make any difference, unfortunately. Just did it again, to make sure, no result sadly.

Do you have iTunes 8 or 9.2.1 - which is the last version for Tiger.

Have only been able to find a couple of others with your issue and both were resolved by running Software Update. Maybe try restarting if you haven't done so yet.

Next I'd try repairing permissions - have seen it fix some strange issues.

After that, I'd probably try reinstalling 9.2.1.
(Found one last night that was specifically for PPC at Apple's site, but can't find it this morning.)

Let us know.

And what pops up in iTunes that you can't get rid of? No option just to cancel out of it?

Thanks; I'm on 8.2.1 for iTunes.

The offending screen is an invitation to download iTunes 10 with lots of stuff extolling the vitrues of the upgrade.

There is no option to skip or move on - other than go to tutorials and that doesn't help or to download (which I did, in desperation) but that does not work on my computer.

Sorry to be a bit dense, but how do you repair permissions?

Seriously?? You have a Mac that's at least 10 yrs old and you've never repaired permissions? No offense meant, I'm just extremely surprised is all...

Have you ever done any maintenance on this machine?

Anyways, open up Applications - Utilities - Disk Utilities
Highlight your MacIntosh HD on the left side and select Repair Permissions on the right side.
Don't be concerned about the ones that it does not repair at this point. There will probably be many and is normal.

No, I've worked on G3, G4 and G5 machines over many years, but never done that with the permissions before. Anyway, done that - to no effect!

The 9.2.1. download didn't work either - I get a message saying I need a mac with a G4, G5 or intel processor!

What a pain! I'm about to admit defeat, download iTunes onto my PC laptop and synch my iPod with that machine. Last resort, of course......

Yep, just discovered that. I've never owned a PPC Mac. I'm one of those Intel switchers.

Have you tried re-installing 8.2.1? You can get it from here.

If you've got a Windows machine, think I'd be inclined to go that route for syncing, only because the latest version of iTunes is available for Win XP and up.

I haven't been able to find anything else either. Only other thing I can think of would be deleting the receipts file, but don't think I'd do that even on my own machine without some backup validation that someone else had tried it.

Thanks; when I go through the offending screen to download - there's a little line that says for Mac G3 users - click on that and it takes you through to installation for 8.2.1 (which I've done!)

Needless to say - back to square 1!

Presumably, my iPod will be wiped of all its tunes if I plug it into my Windows Vista laptop?

Sorry to be a nuisance, but being beaten by Apple is really irritating!

copy your iTunes library and all its files to the Win Vista laptop under your profile\Music folder. It should work.

I just read, in an Apple forum, that stated this:

It turns out that I can get into the store if I do Store-->Search from within iTunes. Once in, I can browse, listen and buy/download as usual. I can also sign in, sign
off and access my account information. I cannot access the itunes Store home page without getting the message described above.
