I have an Epson Stylus Pro 7880 connected to an 2017 iMac (Mojave) and it is connected by ethernet cable as the printer is not WiFi. When the printer is powered on the Internet will not work on the Mac either in Safari or Chrome. As soon as I power the printer off the internet comes back. So it looks like there is a clash between the ethernet connected printer and my internet connection. I also have an Epson Expression Photo XP 960 which is connected by WiFi and this works fine and doesn't have the same effect on the Internet. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this ?

Would connecting the printer to the Mac with USB get around this.

I have used Epson Net Config and it says that the printer does not have an IP address ( whatever that is )

Cheers

Hi

The router is in another room and I don't want cables all over the place.

The printer and the Mac are in the same room about 4 metres apart.

I have looked at the Epson support page but found nothing of use.

I got even more confused when I used the Epson Net Config tool which said that the printer has no IP address.

Cheers

Then you need to enable internet sharing with the printer. Or use the USB.

Then I will need to google that as I have no idea what it is.

Just attach the printer via USB. There is no advantage to using an ethernet connection to print unless your printer and router are close to one another. Print jobs will spawn faster via ethernet, but how important is that to you?

By this I take it you attached the ethernet cable from the printer to the Mac. That will result in NO IP because the Mac doesn't issue any IP numbers, it gets them from the router. The printer has to be either connected to the Mac by USB or connected to the router by Ethernet cable. If you do the Ethernet, the router should issue an IP to the Printer, which the Mac should then be able to see, if the Mac is logged into the same network.

Pardon my stupidity but if I connect it via USB does the IP issue go away?

My printer is about 5 metres awau from the Mac.. Will USB bo OK at this length?

Thanks again for your advice.

Ah, okay. 5 meters is within the specs. I guess I misread your first post. Must be these nasty bats flying around.... ;)

Hi

I have decided to go to using USB cables to connect both my Epson 7880 and Epson Expression Photo XP 960 printers to my iMac. Is it better to connect them to the iMac directly or can I use a hub ( without losing printer performance )? If performance is affected would a powered hub be better suited?

Cheers

If you share your iMacs Wi-Fi through the ethernet connection you will get an IP address.

A connection directly to the iMac is always "better", but I'm pretty sure that a connection through a Hub will work all right. If you have powered Hub, try that first; but I've connected a printer via un unpowered Hub in the past without a problem.

Try it out and see.

Most printers can be connected to an unpowered hub without any problem. Printers normally do not draw a noticeable amount of current from USB so it should be okay.

I can connect my HP LaserJet to my unpowered hub (Apple full sized keyboard with USB 2 connectors) and it works fine.

I wonder if this is of any interest and if it could work...???:

The Epson Expression Photo XP 960 seems to be a wireless printer already:

What's wrong with using a wireless setup or did I miss something???

Apparently we both missed something Patrick. The Epson he has is definitely a wireless printer. That is if it is in fact the one he has?

Epson hasn't produced a non wireless printer in a very long time. My old Epson NX 420 is wireless and it was purchased back in 2013 as a $100 rebate when I bought my 2013 iMac.

OP has 2 Epson printers, one is wireless, the other is the 7880, which is a large format printer.

The WPS Wireless link I posted in #18 tweaked my interest, so i had to do some googling to see if my fairly new isp supplied Hitron router had WPS capabilities, which it seems that it does which would allow wireless printing.

Just a suggestion for the OP in case they would like to pursue the idea.

Apparently, WPS has been fairly common on most recent routers for several years now.

I have found a supplier of a 6 mtr usb 2.0 type A to B cable which they say that it will be ok to use to connect my Epson 7880 printer to my iMac. However, Epson say in the manual that the maximum is 5 mtrs . Does anybody know which is correct before I purchase the cable?

Cheers
