Portal 2 Retail DVD Installation

Assuming that some MF fans are Portal 2 players, has anyone managed to install the game without having to download an 11GB file via Steam?

I have an expensive data dongle connection and I refuse to believe that the only way to install the game once you've gone to a shop to buy a DVD is to download it off the Internet...

From what I'm reading, the co-op mode requires Steam, and on Steam you'll have to have the DRMed-version of the game. If you are just trying to do single-player, then you shouldn't HAVE to get it off Steam too.
