SOLVED. UK PLUSNET ACCOUNT HOLDERS READ ON.
The problem below would appear only to affect those with Yosemite. The solution is to go to Mail/Preferences/Accounts/Advanced and untick the 'Automatically detect and maintain account settings' box. This seems counterintuitive but it seems to work.
Until recently I was able to send and receive e-mail on my Plusnet account. In recent weeks I have only been able to receive.
I have tried deleting and reinstalling the e-mail account and finally ended up with Plusnet support who seem to be aware of some incompatibility with MacMail.
If that is the case I could try restoring OS X 10.1.1 to see if that will rectify the problem.
The alternative is just to reply using another account with an automatic reply to.
