Photos App for OS 10.8.5

I took my iMac to Simply Mac last week to install a new hard drive (mine was failing), add RAM and upgrade my OS to 10.8.5 (Mountain Lion). I've got everything up and running, but lost iPhoto in the process. This came already installed when I bought my computer back in 2008. The Apple web site is no help. It tells me that Photos comes with Yosemite, but I'm not running Yosemite. I need something to manage my photo library. Recommendations?

Did you check the Mac App Store under your purchased items? Also, I'm wondering why "Simply Mac" did not preserve your data and apps when they installed a new hard drive? Was your old hard drive completely dead?

The tech at Simply Mac and I had a failure to communicate. I told him that I had done a backup the night before I brought my computer in. He assumed that meant I would be restoring all of my files to my computer after he installed the new hard drive. I did end up doing that once I got home (they charge to do a file transfer from the old drive to the new), but unfortunately I hadn't backed up my applications. Therefore, iPhoto is gone. I just checked the App Store and it is not in purchased items. So, I need to acquire new photo software. Thoughts?

It depends if you wish something that's free or are willing to pay for something that's better? Affinity Photo from Serif has good reviews but it's $49.99. There's quite a few free photo editing programs including GIMP, but you can search and decide.

GIMP is not even a remote substitute for iPhoto. It is an editing program; iPhoto (and Photos) are catalog-and-managment programs (essentially photo databases) with some basic editing functionality included.

What I'm wondering is how Photos is even running on 10.8.5, since it requires Yosemite as I understand it. Those Simply Mac guys ... simply made a mistake there, since an install of Mountain Lion (10.8.x) would NOT replace iPhoto. Are you absolutely certain they didn't just upgrade you to Yosemite? Are you absolutely certain iPhoto is not still in your Applications folder?

Notice he didn't say Photos was running on 10.8.5.

Well-spotted! Yeah, I'm familiar with the Simply chain (if they are the same company I'm thinking of ... based in Vancouver with an outlet in some of the burbs there, as well as here in Victoria), and this would be a colossal, er, "muck-up" since it required some kind of deliberate action to accomplish ... the Simply stores I know (in Vancouver and Victoria) have good reps ...
