System preferences>Sharing>Services tab>turn on personal file sharing and windows sharing (just check the boxes next to these options).

you should be good after that.

I didn't think you needed to turn on the Sharing stuff unless you were trying to connect the Windows PC's to the Mac?

KLank, you are correct.

You probably need to set your mac to the same workgroup.

If you know the workgroup name of the Windows systems, go into your applications>utilities>Directory Access

You will have to unlock the window with your admin account name & password. Then click SMB then the CONFIGURE button.

The top field on the resulting window is the workgroup name.

Now, one note on networking with Windows machines. My network at home acts like this...

I open the finder and click on Network (10.3.3). The Local Servers icon appears but that is all. If I wait (up to 60 seconds) the other Windows computers eventually appear. Be sure you give it time to "discover" the other machines.

Is the item you are trying to open a Windows Shortcut (alias?) or a real file?

This is going to be a tough one. I am sure you have checked to make sure File & Printer Sharing is activated on the Windows Machine in question. I would also check the folder or file in question and see if it's security is set to specific groups or accounts. If it isn't available to Everybody or the login you used to log into the windows box from the Mac, it will do strange things.

I'm having the same issue. I get that error if I browse to the windows box to connect. I think it has something to do with the XP machines and the server being part of a Windows 2003 Active directory domain. There is something about Win2k3 servers requiring a secure connection or something. I have tried to disable it on the domain controller, but it doesn't seem to help.

finally I got the others machines

After few tries I am able to access my ibook using WinXP, but is only 2 of 3 machines that can see my mac, the other one is not capable to see the mac.
and one more issue: I can see the mac thru the PC but not the PC's thru the mac.
this is not a problem, now I can share the files.

thank you for all the help provided. and keep going with this amazing place.

Regards
El Serch
