Friend of mine is traveling to Europe and doesn't want to buy an e-SIM card. Will the camera on the phone work anyway? TIA

Of course. Camera doesn't care about cell service. Without service, obviously no sync'ing will happen until the phone is on WiFi.

What cell service is your friend using? They should check with their provider to see what is available.

But, as Ashwin says, the camera will work with the phone, even in Airplane mode, wtih zero connections, so it will work if it's connected in any way. Sync will depend on connections.

Agree with Jake to check with the carriers.

T-Mobile, for example, provides access in a variety of countries at slower speeds data and text. Voice calls cost money, but I've my phone in Switzerland, Iceland, France and India with no issues. The moment I get out of Airplane mode, I end up joining the local partner of T-Mobile.

If you're going to make phone calls, then getting a local sim is best.

We just travelled to UK and T-mobile worked there very well. I got free texts, 5GB of high-speed data per month and voice calls were $0.25/minute. That was included in my Magenta 55 plan at no extra cost. We did make local calls, but only a few. I think the total time on local calls was 6 minutes, total.

Verizon, on the other hand, when I was with them, was $10/day overseas for any services. When I had them, a local SIM made a LOT of sense.

That's what I thought, but wanted to check. Thanks.

Thanks everyone! You are just the best bunch of folks, and my friend is going to be quite happy. Plus, I'll get pix of her trip.

An additional thing you might lose with taking pictures without service is likely geo-location tagging of the pictures. So you won't get the nice location baed picture tracking that is currently available within Photos.

And there is no way of adding this information after the fact..FYI

I didn't realize that you couldn't add the location data after the fact. Learn something new every day.

Actually, you can add location later. It's in the metadata you can access through Photos on a Mac. However, if you use the GPS location, and if you have data through WiFi (or cellular) it will use the latitude/longitude from the GPS to ID the location. And it works without Cellular if you have a Wifi connection.

To get at least the lat/long data, your friend can turn on "Location Services" in Settings/Privacy & Security.

Again, I would check with her provider to see if they have overseas services. Verizon is very expensive, but other providers may not be so exhorbitant.

Get a local SIM at the airport, multiple advantages, usually quite cheap.
