OS 10.10 Can`t connect to my ext.HD ?

Hi.
Don`t know if this has anything to do with the new OS Yosemite, but never the way, have`nt had this problem on earlier OS` with this extHD.....

Connecting my extHD (3TB Platinum) to my iMac (2012) i can`t get to see the HD.... Nothing at all happens...... no message, nothing...... The drive is relatively new, and has worked without any problems earlier....there are light in the HD, and it is spinning nicely....?

I need some help to get "in contact with this drive"

I use the drive as my 2. backup-option for my huge photo-collection, so despite being the 2. backup, i would appreciate some help getting "in touch"...!
The primarily backup, also being an ext.HD, has no problem to connect an bee shown on the iMac....

Are you saying that the disk does not show up in Finder ?
Can you see the external disk in the DiskUtility.app ( Applications/utilities )
I assume it is a USB connection .... can you try another USB cable ?

Check under Finder > Preferences > General and make sure the box is ticked for show external drives.

Hi again....

I don`t know what the reason, but connected the extHD today, and it popped-up normally as an icon on the desktop..... a bit confused, and still slightly worried for "the future", as the disk contains important material for me.... ok the 2. backup, but

As answers to your questions, it did`nt pop-up in Finder (today it does), and its ticked in Finder/Pref.../General.... to "show ext.HD".....

Did a disk-control in DiskUtility, it reported "all seems ok"......

Might be just one of these days we sometimes run in to, and luckily manage to survive, not knowing how though

Question: are used to just connecting (usb) the extHD and turning them on.... and of course, pushing them out before disconnecting........ are there other ways ?

Not sure what "pushing them out" means, but you should eject or unmount them before disconnecting.

As for why they don't show up, some drives have built in power saving that shuts down the spinning when the drives are idle for a while. If they are connected to USB, and the system looks for them, they don't get spinning again sufficiently quickly to keep OS X happy, so OS X then reports them as "missing" when in fact they are just slow to arrive. If you can, check to see if your drives have that feature and if it can be disabled.

Like Windows, before disconnecting unmount by dragging to the Trash. Otherwise the drive maybe corrupted, or even fatally injured!

If it was the first time you had connected the external HD since updating your OS it may simply have been related to indexing. It is as you mentioned a 3Tb drive and i know my 1Tb drive took about 2 mins to show up when I first plugged it in after updating to Yosemite.

thanks for all the hints, i still do not know why it showed up as it did, i have not seen it since that day, so lets see.....
And yes, "un-mount" was the english word for "pushing out".....ahhhhh sometimes i just miss the words in english, danish being my usual communicating langues
