OS 10.1.5 will not complete the boot process

The root partition was maxed out and the system would not boot.
I brought the system up in single user mode, then did a file system
check. After having trouble removing files due to permission problem.
Failed to notice that the root file system was read only. After booting
with the 10.1 install cd rom, doing another file system check. I shut the
system down and brought it up in single user mode again. That is when I
saw the read only mode. I did another file system check, followed by a
mount -uw. Then I was able to remove some files. I now have about 19
megs of disk space available, I rebooted the system. The system boots
to the blue screen with the white box. In the white box there is a blue Apple
and the words Mac OS X. The barber pole does not appear.

What can I do to get the system to complete the boot cycle?

Boot into single user mode, run fsck -y, then mount -uw /. Then rm /var/vm/*
See if that gets you enough space to complete the GUI boot cycle. (If you can, remove or offload even more data so there is at least enough room for a single swap file to be written.)

Thank you, gatorparrots for your responds. I have done what you
suggest and now have about 59 megs in the root partition. This
favor of UNIX is very different. How do I mount one of my other
file systems. I done see any thing in the fstab file. I have a 30 gb
partition I can us to get some of the data off the users directories.

I found some stuff in one of my users trash directory. I removed the files
which gave me about 400 megs and then reboot the system. I still get
the same results. The blue screen with a white box in the center. Inside the
white box is a the blue Apple and the words Mac OS X. The barber pole does not
start. I have 384 megs of RAM. What is the default size swap space?

cat /etc/rc | grep pager

dynamic_pager -H 40000000 -L 160000000 -S 80000000 -F ${swapdir}/swapfile

The default size is @80MB.

Try booting in verbose mode to see what is actually hanging at the end of the boot process, or look in /var/log/system.log for more clues from the last boot failure.

Still no progress

Using the verbose mode, as you suggest I see the following:

Everything starts as it should, then it stops.

Looked at the system.log and did not see anything.


I have few questions?

How can I mount the other file systems and zip drive, so I can
copy some of the important file off the system. In case I have
to rebuild.

Can I load 10.2.5 on a G3 powermac 233 mhz, with 384 mb of RAM,
and a 40 gb hard disk?

I rebooted and looked at the system.log and found this;

netinfod local[xxxxx]: setsid failed: operation not permitted

lookupd[xxxxx]: _lookup_all (getfsent) failed

Thanx for some more suggestions gatorparrots. My house is all
mess up right now due to the installation of new carpet. Hopefully
I can get back to resolving this problem this evening. I am not
running Sharity. I am running the default load, with no extra
options.

Still no luck. I now looking at putting 10.2.5 on the
G3. Can I install 10.2.5 on a biege 233 Mhz G3,
with 384 megas of RAM. The internal disk drive is
at 40 Gb?

Hmmm, that might be a little slow. But then again I am runing Win2K on P3-500's You should be able to, i would guess. It only depends on your sanity and working with a slow OS

To end this story. I am in the process of re-installing
the 10.1.5 on the power mac g3.
