Opinion on Gimmeblocker?

Hi all,

I am having a problem with 'Mackeeper' ads popping up constantly. I have never downloaded this app because I know it is spam/malware, so there are no Mackeeper files on my computer to delete.

I read that an app called Gimmeblocker is supposed to zap these ads before they pop up, but I am so paranoid about downloading any app that doesn't come directly from Apple, so before I do, can anyone give an opinion of Gimmeblocker? Is it safe?

Thanks!

A number of folks here at Mac-Forums have been recommending/had luck with an app called "AdBlock". You could try this one.

Yeah, adblock works and I also run ghostery which stops trackers. Here is a link to adblock:

https://adblockplus.org/en/safari (There is also a chrome version listed on the page.)

Also ghostry:

https://www.ghostery.com/en/download

You don't say what browser you are using so I tried to include links offering different browser options. Also make sure if you are in Safari that under preferences -> security that the block pop ups is checked.

BTW: Never heard of gimmeblocker so I can't offer an opinion on it.

Hope this helps!

Thanks, Lisa! I am running Safari and yes, pop-ups are blocked. I think a site called 'Clip Converter' may be the culprit for the ads.

AdwareMedic worked a treat for me. I kept having extra Tabs coming up in Safari for MacKeeper and such like. It was caused by Adware that had come from some website. AdwareMedic got rid of it.
