Hi,just got new Mac Mini (older version).Should i right away update a OS from OS X 10.9.5 to Yosemite?

Depends.

By older what do you mean precisely? How much memory? Are you an experienced Mac user? Have you got an external drive with everything backed up?

It's not an upDATE, it's an upGRADE, which is a much more significant change.

hi,thanks for the reply.it is Intel Core i5,2.5 GHz,4GB memory.And yes,i`m new with Mac.Just did backup yesterday on a external hard drive with Time M.

Both Mavericks and Yosemite will be happier with more RAM if you can upgrade that, but I see no reason in particular why you shouldn't upgrade to Yosemite, since it is now the de-facto standard OS and your machine is plenty capable of running it.

As your Mini can handle 16GB of memory, certainly upgrade as chas m suggests to at least 8GB and then download and go with Yosemite. It is a free upgrade.

Thank you for the advice. Will do the RAM upgrade.Any recommendation for 8 any 16 GB?

My recommendation is that if your funds will permit, go ahead and max it out at 16GB. OWC is an excellent source for RAM and they will make sure you get the right stuff. Also, they have tutorials on RAM installation if you feel you can handle that yourself.
