I am using a mac with safari and snow leopard. I am trying to download a firmware update for my sharp bluray dvd player. After I download the firmware I try to open it and it keeps opening using text/edit. All I get is computer jargon. What application should I use to open this download so that I can use it to fix my bluray player?

What does your owner's manual for the Blue Ray say? Also, you can go to the manufacturer's web site and look for instructions on how to update the firmware.

Regards.

Don't think that's going to help him. He probably either needs a firmware updater program from Sharp, or he may have software that came with the Blue Ray drive which will do the firmware update.

And it's probably going to have to be run in Windows which is why he needs to read the manual or get on the manufacturer's web site and find out.

Regards.

Yep. shouldn't be opening that file on your computer at all.

Most B-R players will require you to burn that file to disc and pop it into the machine where it will then update the firmware, some have a USB port so you can put it on a flash drive, while some players are network aware and you can point them to the file on your computer or have the player phone home and get the file itself. But gotta follow the manufacturers directions and while extremely rare, you can brick a B-R player.

Since you have opened that file in a text editor, I would strongly encourage you to trash it and download another copy and do not open it unless specifically told to do so per the directions for updating your player. Directions should have been the same place you downloaded the file from.
