This used to be possible... but the new quicktime doesn't seem to recognize the format anymore. Do I have to buy QT pro now just to view gif animations with playback options?

No, you don't need QT Pro, it works with the standard version.
Check in your Utilities folder for QT7, it should be there but if it isn't you can download it here.
Apple - QuickTime - Download

It's strange, apple now has 3 versions of QT, the newest that has a blackish interface, QT7, and QT7 Pro.
One would think they could stick it all into one application, instead of having 3 different versions.

There's no other quicktime in my utilities folder. It doesn't allow me to install the one you linked to because of Qucktime X's presence.

GIF files should open in Preview or Safari. Is there some reason you need to use QuickTime?

Regards.
