I downloaded Onyx from it's website, on clicking it , I get the message that this is from an unknown developer. should I proceed anyway? I am on Yosemite, with the previous version of Onyx on the older OSX, there was no problem.

If you have downloaded Onyx from here
Titanium Software - OnyX

Then you are good to go. The warning you see when you launch Onyx can be ignored.... you can trust Onyx.

Cheers ... McBie

What you are seeing is Apple's Gatekeeper system. It's part of the security system in OS X. Not everything flagged by Gatekeeper is bad though. Here's more information if you're interested. OS X: About Gatekeeper - Apple Support

Simple, one-time workaround (works with other apps that are from developers not recognized by Apple): select the app (that's a single-click), right-click, select "open," okay the "are you sure" dialog box. It will not ask you again.

CAUTION: only do this with apps from unregistered developers that you trust (OnyX is entirely trustworthy). NEVER do this for apps you are not 100 percent certain are legit.
