(This issue may have been discussed in earlier posts)
I have a reliable Canon Pixma iP90v printer, and a new MacBook Pro (running Sierra). The Canon site indicated they were incompatible, but is it possible to download an earlier OS to enable the MacBook to revert when necessary to be compatible with the printer?

Really? Not knowing where you are located, but, I did an internet search using DuckDuckGo, and found this, https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/.../support-inkjet-printer/ip-series/pixma-ip90v, which has a driver for Sierra. Check it out, see if it works for your printer.

Hi Galvinize - just checked Bob's link (first pic below), which detected that my MBPro had Sierra installed - then clicked on 'Drivers', and as you stated above none is available from Canon (circled in blue) - but, not surprising, i.e. I found a review for that printer which dates to 2005 (2nd pic) - unless Craig's CUPS idea works for you, then attaching the printer to a computer w/ an older macOS or buying a new printer seems to be your choices, sorry. Dave :)

@galvinize

Go ahead and authorize CUPs on your machine as recommended by Craig in post #2. That should work even if it doesn't give you complete control over the printer as before. At least it will be somewhat useable. However, as inexpensive as printers are nowadays, a new printer might be best. Just make sure you choose one that has Mac support for the latest version of Sierra and soon High Sierra.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, Canon support suggested going to the Driver website, and change the (detected) OS from 10.12.6 to 10.8, then download and install the CUPS Printer Driver, version 10.67.2 option. But they cautioned functionality was not certain.

FWIW: that Canon Pixma iP90v printer is kaput as far as Apple is concerned, so they say:
No longer available as software updates

Try the CUPS suggestions. Or sometimes a similar driver just may work, but a lot of fiddly time involved usually.
