Ok..Found this old G5 A1047 dual 2g. It has a bad processor. Move the good one to the top bay and got the machine going. One processor is newer than the broken one. How close to the serial number should I be looking for (630-6427) or does it matter just as long it fits a A1047 and is 2 gig.

sorry to say you might not want to bother first off powerpc macs are no longer supported by apple the max os you can use is 10.5 which is also not supported and that machine you need to matching processors with matching serials or you fry one which is exactly what happened.

most powerpc g5 processors are expensive replacement ones on ebay go for 700.00 to as much as 800.00 its not worth the effort.

Check on eBay. You should be able to pick up a replacement CPU at a reasonable price. I don't know where John is getting his prices from, but a working G5 like yours on eBay would go for much less than $700.

Regarding cpu prices. 100% complete & working Powermac G5's can be had via eBay for $100 or less (I've even seen some sell for $50...and one as little as $21 bucks)...completely 100% operational.:)

So if cpu only prices are extremely expensive...just purchase a complete working unit for $100 or less. No need to swap the cpu's...since the eBay unit will be 100% operational.

Of course I know "Mac SK's" "MO" (method of operation) with Mac's. Finding them on the curb (free), in a dumpster (free), garage sale (almost free), or Thrift shop (almost free). So prices for replacement parts got to be free/cheap!;)lol

Where do yall guys shop? G5 processors at like $7.00. $35 for a pair on eBay. Needed to know if they need to be matched pairs. I can just change the code to turn off the number 2 processor. Yall know I care not about Apple support and all that jazz..its just to fool around with ..always put Linux on it. It was free!

I wanted to specifically address Powermac G5 cpu prices. As an example…here's a Powermac G5 cpu & heatsink on eBay for $4.95 (Buy It Now) + $10.00 shipping.

I'm not sure where the someone is getting $700-$800 cpu's…or why someone would pay so much when eBay has MUCH less expensive alternatives.:)

Thank You ;)...Ok ..so far found out if the last 4th digit in the EEE number before the serial number, is the same the odds are good they are a match. Mine is an R. So Ill look for the same digit on a used processor. Im still searching for more info on this match pair thing  I never give up ..not easily

Ok...I have a list of EEE codes for the good processor. The bad processor code is in the list so someone did match it up back when. Theres 22 possible matches. Now the search begins.

Sounds like great progress. 22 possible matches sounds like a lot of options.:)

Think johodd is getting confused with Mac Pro CPU prices. Last week he posted about a G5 Mac Pro of which there is no such animal.

Ok...Got this all worked down to 5 processor numbers that work in this machine. I need a 630-4890 (CPU Card) to exactly match the one good processor and there is one on eBay for $25.00. But Im cheep and may look some more first.

Hey Harry. I bought a pair of quad-core X5355 Mac Pro cpu's for $40 bucks US a little while back. CPU's only (no heatsinks). Still well short of the $700-$800 prices mentioned earlier.

Of course if we were talking Mac Pro cpu's for a much newer model Mac Pro…those would be a lot more expensive.

Nick have replaced four sets of 5355's now and have seen a set come with the heatsink. Think they must be rarer than the CPUs. Five years ago 5355's at $250 a pair was good value. Are they a matched set with the same number on them?

I seem to remember they were a good bit more than $250 5 years ago. Which is why I didn't do the upgrade then. The cpu's I got were matched as well.:)

Excuse me:

The mac pro was the g5 before it became intel mac pro.

look at the old apple introductions on it on youtube they even refer to it as the Mac Pro G5.

as for processors try this

The xserve processors are way cheaper and will fit the mac pro g5 model but you need the heatsink and the heatsink compound because you have to convert the processor from a xserve flat heatsink to a mac pro g5 heatsink there only 50.00 and you can even get 1.8 ghz ones cheaper then that.

the 700 to 800 is total if you want to have someone purchase the processors and install them for you because the cooling system on that model usually was liquid cooled if the model you have isn't liquid cooled then its a upgraded 1.8 ghz to a 2 ghz

Wrong again john.

The model before the Mac Pro were Dual Core G5's released in late 2005. Never a PowerPC Mac Pro.

Good work. Remember clean the surfaces with an alcohol wipe and a cotton bud, and barely enough Arctic Silver to cover the face.

I'm not sure what those You Tube videos are saying (haven't seen them). But if someone utilizes almost any of the Macintosh computer model info sources (websites or apps)…you either have a:

- Powermac G5 (discontinued October, 2006)
- Mac Pro (introduced August, 2006)

Powermac G5's were based on Motorola-IBM "PowerPC" cpu…and Mac Pro's were/are based on Intel cpu's. These two models are VERY different internally…but VERY similar looking externally (except the Mac Pro has two optical drive slots vs. one for the Powermac G5).
