I know this is a slow process of elimination and a PITA for you but one more question. Forgive me if you've already answered this but does the same thing happen if you initiate the sleep command from the Apple Menu? :|

I suppose I was just wondering if this is a mechanical or program error. Your computer seems to be confusing sleep mode with shut down. My guess is that it is a program error.
If all else fails you might like to try repairing permissions With Disk Utility and Verify your HD as well. If a HD error is detected you will be instructed to restart in Recovery mode to repair the HD.
Just ensure you have a backup first.

Rod, Yes, the same thing happens if I initiate sleep from the menu.

I'm a little reluctant to check permissions and use disc utility to repair a potential disc error. The back up no longer functions.

I have an appointment at the Apple store on Monday. The machine has already had a significant (total) meltdown after installing the Yosemite upgrade. The Mac Geniuses restored the machine and installed the upgrade. The wheels are coming off again, less dramatically this time, but it gets worse every hour.

I just hope they honor the warranty, it began the meltdown the day BEFORE the warranty ran out.

It has been my experience that Apple are pretty lenient with their warranty coverage so I hope that works out for you too. As you said this is an ongoing issue which began before the coverage ran out plus they have already had hands on and may have (inadvertently) caused the issue.
Either way I'm sure we would all be interested to hear the results of your visit.
Cheers,

Try booting in Safe Mode and then closing the lid to see what happens. If it doesn't throw the error, then it's something that is running in your machine, maybe as part of your bouts process.

Also, while booted into Safe Boot, run Disk Utility and Repair Permissions and Verify Disk.

Then shutdown and boot normally, after checking if your problem disappears or not.
