Odd problem copying an App

I work with a developer who is developing a small Mac App using X-Code. He sends me builds of the App to evaluate in the form of a small zip file attached to an e-mail.

I need to test the App on two Macs. I receive the e-mail on Mac #1, download the attachment to my desktop, unzip it and run it.

If this is satisfactory I want to run it on Mac #2. If I copy the App itself to the desktop of Mac #2 it will not run. Instead, I must copy the zip file, and extract the App from it on Mac #2. Then it runs fine.

Does this make sense to anyone? The developer seems unable to explain it.

Are you getting an error message like "this App cannot run because it's damaged" or something like that?
Check your Gatekeeper settings under Security and Privacy in System Preferences.
