My AirPort Extreme is about 5 years old. It says it's "Version 7.9.1". It works fine but I'm wondering if it is the latest / greatest / fastest? Has the AirPort Extreme technology changed / improved in 5 years?

There is no Airport Extreme anymore. Apple got out of that business a few years back and stopped all support for existing hardware, so no new updates or anything. If your router is working fine, then stick with it.

If you need an upgrade to the newer technologies (802.11N, dual-band, multi-antenna, MIMO, etc.) then you'll have to switch brands to a different manufacturer.

I recently upgraded to a TP-Link Archer 20 from Airport Extreme and it's working quite well.

Hi Barry... - as already stated, Apple has been out of the router business for quite a while (see pic below) - a visit to their website shows their support for 'mesh networking' and Netgear and Linksys products using that technology can be purchased from them. For myself I'm still using an older model Airport Extreme, i.e. 802.11n purchased in 2013 - still going strong and serves out streaming needs; when I do need a replacement, may look into the 'mesh options' despite their current higher costs. BTW, my router is on its last upgrade, 7.8.1 so I suspect that you own the taller model that replaced mine and can use the 802.11ac protocol? Dave :)
